Other Obsessions: {Sewing} Hemlock "tee" sweater

Taking a little break from Colette patterns ;)

Hemlock Tee is a free pattern by Grainline Studio. If you have been sewing for more than a month and you follow at least 5 sewing blogs, you have heard of Grainline Studio among many other popular indie pattern designers.

Back when I started sewing from indie patterns, Grainline Studio really caught my eyes with their shorts pattern,  Maritime Shorts. At the time though, I found the idea of PDF patterns a hassle and didn't attempt to purchase the pattern.

When I started sewing up a storm back in March during the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy, I purchased a small, $15 paper cutter from Amazon--for the sole purpose of putting together PDF patterns. So I decided to try PDF pattern and found Hemlock tee, a free pattern! on Grainline's website.

I had put aside this fabric for something comfy and basic for MONTHS. I got 5yds of this sweater knit fabric from Michael Levine Loft last year. It's not super stretchy so it has good structure, it's semi-sheer and I love the big stripes.

This project, though, made me really want a coverstitch machine. Trying to hem or even stitch sweater knit with a serger and a straight stitch machine results in small pieces of loops of thread to fall out, and if you're not expert in changing settings on the serger, you'll end up with a nice lettuce hem.....

Overall though, even though I'm shedding little loops of thread everywhere I go right now, I love the fit of this "tee." I think I have to make another out of more stable knit fabric...
